April Awarded the Michael Hirschfeld Scriptwriting Scholarship

On completion of the Masters degree in Scriptwriting at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University of Wellington, April has been awarded the Michael Hirschfeld Scriptwriting Scholarship to work on her feature film script.

My dear friends Joan and Mike Street of The River City Players are producing STiFF for one week only from 12 to 19 December with all proceeds going to Hospice. These stalwarts of Wanganui theatre are sure to create a brilliant and hilarious production in my old home town!

First production of Motel to be in Christchurch

April's latest theatre drama, Motel, will have its first production in Christchurch in June. Mounted by Cas'n'Ova Productions, this

Motel - Professional Premiere in Auckland

Utu Pihikete - In pre-producton

April’s latest film Utu Pihikete is now in pre-production with the shoot scheduled for November 2013.  Directed by Craig Hutchison of Cas’n’Ova Productions and Cinematography by Matt Sharp (Eternity, When Night Falls, Letter For Hope), the film stars Steven Ray, Ralph Johnson and April.

Letter for Hope - Recognition at Film Festivals

Letter for Hope has this year been recognised in four film festivals. The film was officially selected by the Bare Bones International Film & Music Festival, the River Bend Film Festival and the Saratosa Film Festival. It also received an Honorable Mention at the Sunset Film

April’s feature film screenplay Motel made it to the quarter finals (top 5%) of the prestigious BlueCat Screenplay competition. 

Her short film Rare made it to the first cut in the Shorts section of this international contest.


April’s new stage play Charlotte Badger is a finalist in the prestigious Adam NZ Play Award.


A Silver Medal in the docudrama section of the New York Festivals International Film and TV Awards for Passion in Paradise

a television series written and directed by Bryan Bruce, in which April played the role of Mary King.

Exciting Film News

April’s recent film productions, Utu Pihikete and Letter for Hope are two of the short films selected to screen at the New Zealand Film

Festival in China in April 2016. The films at this festival should reach a theatrical audience of more than 10,000 people in 42

screenings across three major cities. The selection was made by the China Film Bureau and the New Zealand Film Commission.

Both films will be screened for six months on international Air New Zealand flights from June and also on the TgoTV network in

the United States.

Keeping Up with April: Short Horror & Theatre News

April has had great success with her latest short film REM. The horror-fantasy has won several awards and had screenings around the world, including the Horror Hound festival in Cincinnati (the largest horror convention in the US).  The film received a REMI Award at Worldfest, a Bronze Medal in the Sci Fi section at the Global Independent Film Awards, and an Award of Excellence Special Mention at the Indiefest Film Awards. REM was selected for the Women In Film And Television International Short Film Showcase on International Women’s Day.  April received a Best Director nomination at the Ouchy Film Awards, Switzerland and Best Foreign Horror and Best Foreign Short awards at the LAIFF and Hollywood Boulevard Film Festival respectively.  


Elsewhere April's comedy play Bonking James Bond has now had two productions Scotland and her play Death and Taxe$ is about to be produced in Tasmania. April has also appeared on stage at Circa with “Hens’ Teeth” performing a new sketch called Simply The Breast about a pair of boobs having their first mammogram.
